Fall is one of the most productive times of year to fish the Gulf Coast and October is no exception. Cooler temperatures, calmer seas, and a packed species calendar make this one of our favorite months to run trips out of Perdido Key. Here's everything biting right now and what's closing soon — so you don't miss your window.

Offshore Fishing — October 2026

Flounder — Open Now, Closes October 14

Flounder are open for recreational harvest right now but the window is closing fast. The season closes October 15 and doesn't reopen until December 1, 2026 — so if you want flounder in the cooler, you have until October 14 to get it done. October is prime time for flounder as they feed aggressively ahead of their fall migration, making this one of the best opportunities of the year to target them.

Greater Amberjack — Last Chance, Closes October 13

The 2026 Greater Amberjack season is in its final days. The season closes at 12:01 a.m. on October 14 — making the weekend of October 10–13 your last shot. This has been a strong 43-day season, up from just 26 days in 2025. If you haven't targeted amberjack this fall, don't let this chance pass — they're one of the hardest-fighting fish in the Gulf and they're stacked on the wrecks and reefs right now.

  • Season Closes: October 13, 2026 (12:01 a.m. October 14)
  • Bag Limit: 1 fish per person, per day
  • Size Limit: 34 inches fork length minimum

Red Snapper — Fall Weekend Dates Still Available

The private-boat red snapper season has transitioned to its fall weekend schedule but there's still plenty of action left. Here are the remaining open dates through the end of October:

  • October 9–11
  • October 16–18
  • October 23–25
  • October 30 – November 1

The federal for-hire season runs through October 26 — book a trip with Tradition before that window closes. View red snapper charter details →

Triggerfish — Open Through December 31

Triggerfish season runs through the end of the year and October is prime time. These reef fish are stacked on nearshore wrecks and hard bottom structure — firm, sweet fillets and a scrappy fight make them one of the most popular targets for fall bottom fishing trips. Book a triggerfish charter →

Inshore Fishing — October 2026

Fall is hands down the best time of year for inshore fishing around Pensacola and Perdido Key — and October is when it really turns on.

Bull Redfish — Fall Prime Time

October is prime time for bull redfish around Pensacola. Large schools of oversized reds gather around Pensacola Pass and the nearshore reefs as water temperatures begin to drop — making this one of the most exciting inshore fishing opportunities of the entire year. These aren't your average slot fish — bull redfish run big and fight hard. If you've never experienced a bull red on light tackle, October is your month.

Spanish Mackerel — Still Biting

Spanish mackerel are still very much in play along the beaches and nearshore waters. Action will start to taper as temperatures cool through October, so get your mackerel trips in early in the month while they're still active.

Book an inshore fishing charter and get in on the best inshore fishing of the year before fall winds down.

Closing Soon — Don't Miss Your Window

October has some important closing dates to keep in mind:

  • October 13: Greater Amberjack season closes at 12:01 a.m. October 14
  • October 14: Flounder harvest closes through November 30
  • October 26: Federal for-hire Red Snapper season closes

Check our seasonal fishing guide for a full breakdown of what's biting month by month.
