September marks the start of cooler mornings and calmer seas along the Gulf Coast, making it one of the best months to fish in Pensacola and Perdido Key. Whether you're heading offshore, nearshore, or staying inshore, the variety of species and ideal conditions make for unforgettable fishing experiences.
Offshore Fishing in Pensacola & Perdido Key
Offshore waters are producing strong action this month:
King Mackerel – These fast, aggressive fish are a staple of trolling trips. They strike hard and fight harder, making them a favorite among sport anglers.
Spanish Mackerel – Found in schools near the surface, Spanish mackerel are perfect for light tackle and respond well to spoons and small live bait. Their mild flavor makes them a great catch for the grill.
Mahi-Mahi (Dolphin) – These colorful fish are found farther offshore and are known for their acrobatics and excellent table quality.
Amberjack – Often called “reef donkeys,” amberjack are powerful fighters found around deep wrecks and reefs.
Red Snapper – While federal seasons may be limited, state waters often allow harvests in September. These prized reef fish are abundant and delicious. Be sure to check current regulations with your captain.

Sharks – Blacktip, spinner, and bull sharks are active offshore and provide a thrilling challenge for anglers looking for big fights.
Nearshore Fishing in Pensacola & Perdido Key
Fishing just off the beaches and around the passes is productive and accessible:
Flounder – These bottom-dwelling ambush predators are beginning their fall migration. Look for them near sandy bottoms and structure using live bait or soft plastics.
Triggerfish – Found around reefs and wrecks, triggerfish are excellent table fare and often caught while bottom fishing.
Spanish Mackerel – Also common nearshore, especially around bait balls and tide lines. They’re fast and fun to catch, often hitting lures aggressively.
Sharks – Nearshore shark fishing is popular in September, especially around bait schools. Many species are catch-and-release only, but the fight is unforgettable.
Inshore Fishing in Pensacola & Perdido Key
The inshore bite is heating up with cooler temperatures and baitfish moving into the bays:
Redfish – Bull reds are showing up around bridges, passes, and flats. Sight fishing for tailing reds in shallow water is especially productive this time of year.
Speckled Trout – Cooler mornings bring trout into shallower areas. Topwater lures and live shrimp work well during low-light hours.
Flounder – Also active inshore, especially near docks, grass beds, and sandy drop-offs.
Sheepshead – These striped fish are starting to gather around pilings, jetties, and other structures. They feed on crustaceans and are best caught using fiddler crabs or shrimp.
